Duane's Practice Tips
From Duane's llight reading of The Mastery of Music: Ten Pathways to True Artistry by Barry Green: For pieces that are full of accidentals/difficult fingerings and intricate rhythms (e.g., Mambo from Four Dances from "West Side Story", first practice playing all the right notes and don't worry about the rhythms. Once the fingerings are "settled in," focus on the rhythms and don't worry if you miss the occasional note. Percussionists, since you don't have to worry about the notes so much, maybe you could practice playing in a legato style! ;)
Another tip for dealing with difficult rhythms: sing the part so that you can tap out the beats like a metronome.
